Journey to X review, Cottesloe

X-ultance
Journey to X is part of this year's Connections Festival at the Cottesloe: one of a series of new plays written for, and performed by, actors in the 13-19 age group. A celebration of young talent, energy, aspiration and graft, it showcases ten works. Inevitably there are flaws, but these are unimportant in one hour pieces where the audience is as young and excited - and exciting - as the productions.

Nancy Harris's play is about a group of young girls from Derry who're taking their pop act to the X Factor auditions in London. This is clearly a bit odd as the programme holds Irish auditions. It also appears that the young lad who has taken it upon himself to be their manager has some doubts about their competence as performers. As the story progresses, a darker seam starts to emerge...

An able young cast from Derry maintains a brisk pace. The company, MorePies describes itself as doing films and plays 'using the finest local ingredients'. They've certainly put together a good mix here, and the piece is highly enjoyable.

In conclusion: Each night, new plays are showcased. At around £7 a ticket, it's a treat to support new writing and emerging talent from around the UK.  The 2012 festival is sponsored by Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Accenture.
